Welcome to Valley Catholic High School!
There are a few things I would like to share with you that I think make our high school different from others in the area.
As a Catholic, college preparatory high school, deeply rooted in the educational tradition of the liberal arts, it almost goes without saying that we offer a challenging curriculum designed and taught by teachers who sincerely love their subjects. Our teachers are passionate about what they teach and they offer the kind of academic training that will help students see the great value in education itself … the rich, imaginative, impassioned and intellectual world of a well-educated person. Students experience the joy of learning which is designed to last them their entire lifetime.
What is of special note, though, is that we work to keep class sizes small, and not just in the upper division classes like AP Physics II or French V. Most core classes average around 17 students. By doing this we create opportunities for supportive learning environments, foster community and build strong relationships between teachers and students. These relationships continue outside of the classroom. Teachers are at games, concerts and plays. They help with volunteer projects on the weekends, attend Eagle Scout Courts of Honor and are Confirmation sponsors.
Valley Catholic High School has a protected class period for Band, Choir and Orchestra. During that period (8:00–8:40 a.m.), no other classes are offered. This means that a student doesn’t have to decide whether they want to be a musician or a mathematician. They can be both. This allows them the opportunity to continue developing their talent and passion for music without conflict.
Valley Catholic also has a no-cut athletic policy. Our no-cut policy offers the opportunity to explore and participate in ways that are not made possible at other schools. We don’t deny a student the chance to be part of a team, to be given an opportunity to develop skills, learn valuable lessons and make friendships that can last a lifetime. While this does not guarantee a spot on the varsity roster it does allow a student to develop and participate more completely during their four years.
Another unique aspect of student life on our campus is our connection to the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon. They are visible, present and supportive of all that we do. They attend games, concerts and plays. They are, without question, our students’ biggest fans. Their charism guides the mission of the school and is the foundation for our spiritual development.
Inspired by the Sisters, students are encouraged to put their faith into action. Students participate in our Liturgies as lectors, extraordinary ministers and as members of the Liturgy Band. They also serve as retreat and Outdoor School leaders. There are multiple service opportunities throughout the year including the annual Spring Break Spokane Service Trip, Game Nights at the Salvation Army Veterans and Family Center and Soup’s On. Thirty percent of Valley Catholic students perform over 100 hours of community service each year.
Finally, our student body is incredibly involved. Approximately 40 percent of our students participate in the music curriculum. An additional 10 percent of the students are involved in our drama productions. It is not uncommon for many parts to be double cast. Approximately 75 percent of our students participate in at least one sport with about 25 percent of our students participating in two sports each year.
At Valley Catholic High School, you can belong. You can participate. You can have an impact. What a great way to spend four very important years.
