A Letter from VC Music School Director – May 2023

Dear Music School Families: That’s a wrap! Our 2022-23 individual recitals are complete! The students of Valley Catholic Music School have grown tremendously this year. With great pride, we congratulate everyone who participated in the recitals this year. We could not do it without the commitment and dedication of our instructors. Thank you!

Young Artist Recital The Young Artist Recital is a tradition and an end of year recital. A group of students selected by our instructors   exhibited a variety of music and instruments. The event occurred on May 7 before an appreciative audience and was followed by a reception in the HS cafeteria. Click here to view photo album.

INSTRUCTOR OF THE MONTH

SEUNG MIN OH

Seung Min Oh, native of South Korea, had her initial piano training at the age of four. She was a recipient of various piano competition prizes and honor awards during her high school years at Sunhwa Arts School in Seoul, Korea. She holds a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music degree in organ at Yonsei University in Seoul where she studied with Dr. Tong-Soon Kwak. She was also received multiple Yonsei University Honor Awards and academic merit-based scholarships. In 1997 she relocated to Cleveland, Ohio to continue her organ study with Todd Wilson and harpsichord with Janina Ceaser at Cleveland Institute of Music. In 1999 she received her second Master of Music degree in organ from Cleveland Institute of Music with the Henry Fusner Award. In 2003, she relocated to Bloomington, Indiana, for her doctoral study in organ with Dr. Christopher Young and received her doctorate in 2011. She served as associate instructor in the Piano Department at IU for two years. She also served as piano instructor at Midway Covenant Christian School in GA from 2011-2013.

Competitions and Recognitions

A big shout-out to the following students; Olivia S., Flute, 7th Gr. VCMS, Morgan T., Flute, 8th gr. VCMS, Ayush W., Flute, 11th gr. VCHS who participated in the Greater Portland Flute Society Young Artist Competition.  Congratulations to Morgan T. for placing 3rd in the Junior Division. Congratulations to Ayush W. who competed and placed in the top 10 for the State on Saturday, April 29 in the All-State Solo & Ensemble contest.
