Dear Parents and Students,

The middle school staff and I were so happy to see all of you at registration this week. It was a blessing to see you in person, even if only for a short check-in before we move to online learning.

As a reminder, the first two weeks of school are orientation classes. These activities help students connect with classmates and build our school community while helping students understand and meet the academic expectations at Valley Catholic Middle School. This year’s orientation theme is “Starting Your Voyage.” During orientation, students will spend the first two weeks focusing on culture and identity, narrative storytelling, observations and inference, self-advocacy, design thinking, and study skills – all while developing prayerful practices and community.

During the first two weeks, learning assignments will be gradually scaffolded into the program, offering students a soft start to the year. By September 18th, students will move into the subject areas with an understanding of grade-level expectations, and the full support of their community.

We have found that a gradual start to the year helps students be more successful and reduces anxiety. We feel that this is even more important in the current environment of online learning.

We look forward to seeing you at Back to School Night on Tuesday, September 8 (for 0-3 period classes) and Wednesday, September 10 (for periods 4-7). Presentations begin at 6:30 pm each night. Staff will share their teaching plans and styles for the semester, allowing you to share their passion, expertise and approach to education. Each of our teachers is committed to providing students with the very best educational experience this year.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Gfroerer
