A Letter from VC Music School Director – January 2023

Dear Music School Families,

Thank you to our students Zora P., Borna P., and Patrick S., along with Chris Swanson, violin instructor, who performed at Canfield Assisted Living Facility on Dec. 3. They played a variety of holiday pieces and other music for the residents – who loved all the music they shared with them.   The Flutissimos also gave their final performances for the term on Dec. 10.  Our first performance was at Canfield Assisted Living Facility. The residents truly enjoyed the gift of music.  We look forward to performing for them in the future.  We ended our day at Nordstrom, Washington Square. It was so festive with many shoppers stopping by to listen.  Both were highly successful and fun! Please enjoy the photos taken that day, courtesy of Man Tran/Cecilia Nguyen.

INSTRUCTOR OF THE MONTH

Chris Swanson, Violin

A California central-coast native, Chris Swanson started Suzuki-method violin at the age of 4 with Carol Kersten, and later studied with Ronald Copes (current member of the Julliard String Quartet), at the University of Texas at Austin, Indiana University at Bloomington (where Chris received his bachelor’s degree in music), and Oberlin College (baroque violin). He has taught violin to students aged 3 to 68 in the United States and Japan (in Japanese), and has more than 30 years of experience performing and recording orchestral, chamber, film, musical theater, and early music. Chris also plays violin and electric violin in popular and improvisational styles such as blues, jazz, rock, pop, folk, and country. After living in Japan for 10 years, Chris returned to California where he taught violin and English as a Second Language for seven years. He recently moved to Portland with his wife and young son. He is enjoying exploring Portland and the surrounding area and is excited to be part of the Valley Catholic community.
